Sports Day is great way of encouraging children to come together and work constructively to try to win. It is well proved that sports, whether team based or individual, can have lots of positive impacts on children. Participation in sports can aid physical and social development, contribute to academic success and help nurture a child’s self-esteem. Year 5 students were overjoyed to participate in the events conducted during their Sports Day on 21st November 2022.
The Winchester PE department had organized both individual and team events such as 100-meter race, shooting the target, Hurdle race, Obstacle race and Relay race in which all year 5 students participated with great enthusiasm. Presence of Parents motivated the children and parents of year 5 enjoyed watching their children taking part in the sports day. Roald Dahl Day is a celebration of the iconic children's author and commemoration of his achievements whose books have been enchanting, timeless and a persistent favourite amongst children today. Roald Dahl Day happens every year on his birthday celebrating the magic that he brought and continues to bring to children everywhere.
Students of Year 5 celebrated Roald Dahl Day by engaging in a variety of activities, through which they enlivened the spirit of reading and brought Roald Dahl’s characters and scenes to life. Pupils enthusiastically contributed to the ‘Author meets the critic’ and book review activities conducted in their respective classes. It was so spectacular to witness the students dressed up as the author and his book characters as well as to be a part of the knowledge-brimming conversation that took place between the characters and the student critics. The day reiterated the many ‘life lessons’ that Dahl’s books contain which are still very much relevant today. The students of year 5I demonstrated that wellbeing is the experience of health, happiness and prosperity which includes having good mental health and the ability to manage stress through their class assembly on 4th May. Students commenced the assembly with a welcome speech and continued with the play which demonstrated few scenarios about ways to keep themselves and people around them happy. Students shared different quotes on the theme “Wellbeing of mind and body”. The audience enjoyed the melodious song which focused on the wellbeing of all community members. The assembly signed off by thanking all parents. Parents applauded the students for their great performance and gave a positive feedback. Year 5 students as ‘’Agents of space” started off the week with an inquisitive approach. Activities conducted helped the parents and children express their creativity in STEM challenge- Design and build a shock-absorbing system out of recyclable material. The stem challenge helped the students to systematically think through problems, applying the information they learn along the way about technology and engineering to figure out the best solutions. Not to miss the Great Planetary debate where students wrote their opening and closing statement in order to provide important facts and information about the planet/moon and convinced the class to visit their planet/moon.
“The arts and humanities teach us who we are and what we can be. They lie at the very core of the culture of which we are a part.”- Ronald Reagan
With great enthusiasm and ardour, Year 5 had organized Humanities Day on Monday, 13th of March 2023 themed ‘Glorious Greeks’ wherein the students immersed in a variety of recreational activities. We had myriad ways of getting students and parents engaged into activities beyond their usual classroom setting linked with other curricular areas such as language, arts, craft, and math. The students spearheaded the presentations and explained the activities to parents. The aim was to develop the skills and understanding needed to equip young children to play an active and well-informed role in the community. Children demonstrated creative skills making models and collaboration skills while working within teams with dexterity. Overall, everyone had an engaging and informative session. International Math Day is a project led by the International Mathematical Union, along with the support of many other organizations. Each year on March 14th, countries worldwide are invited to celebrate and participate in this event. The Aim of the celebration is to encourage creativity and make connections between mathematics and real-world concepts and ideas. Year 5 marked the day through spectacular parental engagement where parents shared the importance of Mathematics and students enjoyed poster making. Students dressed up as famous Mathematicians and shared their views about the great scholars and achievements.
Today’s pupils are growing up in an increasingly complex world, living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. Technology is certainly a good thing, but control is a better one. Hence, students of Year 5E thought to spread this message by sharing few of their experiences and best practices to prevent their peers from cyber threats.
